The Section of Urban Sociology is one of the oldest sections of the Polish Sociological Association. Currently, the Section is comprised of about 140 members from almost all academic institutions in Poland.
The main objective of the Section is to integrate urban researchers from different scientific centres, to disseminate the results of their research in the scientific community and to reach out to all persons and institutions interested in urban issues with this knowledge. We want to build links between different generations of urban sociologists and promote cooperation between sociology and other disciplines dealing with the urban (urban planning and architecture, anthropology, psychology, geography). Cooperation between The Section of Urban Sociology and the Urban Sociology Research Committee (RN 37) of the European Sociology Association (ESA) is increasingly important. The committee’s work for the period 2019-2021 is coordinated by Marta Smagacz-Poziemska, Vice-President of the The Section of Urban Sociology.
To achieve its goals, the Section organizes and co-organizes nationwide scientific conferences, thematic sessions during Polish Sociological Association Congresses, conducts public activities, and takes an active part in scientific and popular science debates on urban issues. Members of the Section of Urban Sociology cooperate with public institutions and social organizations operating in towns and cities. The latest project of the Section is the Competition for the best monograph in the field of urban sociology and urban studies, established in 2020 as a tribute to Ewa Kaltenberg-Kwiatkowska.
Since January 2017, the Section has a Facebook profile where it informs about new publications, conferences and interesting urban initiatives.
The current Board of the Section of Urban Sociology was elected in September 2019 for the period 2019-2022.
