Condolence Message from the European Sociological Association on the Passing of Michael Burawoy

Condolence Message from the European Sociological Association on the Passing of Michael Burawoy
Published 7 February 2025 in: News

It is with great sadness that we announce to the ESA community the untimely passing of Michael Burawoy. A professor at Berkeley and a great friend to the ESA, he was the father of Public Sociology and a sociologist of immense integrity, passion, kindness, and intellectual rigor. His influence has profoundly shaped sociological debates globally, inspiring scholars to connect their research with broader societal concerns.

Michael was equally at ease advising and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students as he was delivering keynotes at international conferences, always encouraging the sociological endeavor in all its forms. He was an active participant in ESA’s intellectual community, most recently contributing as a keynote speaker at the plenary session of the 16th ESA Conference in Porto in August 2024.

Sociological communities across the world have lost one of the giants of our discipline. His legacy and his works live on, and we mourn his passing. On behalf of the ESA, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Michael Burawoy.
