The section is active in the propagation of qualitative research methods in social sciences. The main theoretical inspiration for the section is symbolic interactionism and qualitative sociology. The Section collaborates with European Society for the Study of Symbolic Interactionism and cooperates in organizing cyclical events and conferences: Conferences of EUSSSI (in Europe), Transdisciplinary Symposium of Qualitative Research (in Poland), and other conferences on qualitative methods and qualitative sociology in general.

The Section prepares also publications on the topic. In 2012 its members published “The Dictionary of Qualitative Sociology”. The section actively cooperates with the journal “Qualitative Sociology Review [3]” .

From 2018 the Section announces the annual competition under the name of Anselm L. Strauss on the best symbolic interactionist publication.

The section has more than 190 members.


Conference on Symbolic Interaction in Lancaster

On 4, 5 and 6 July 2018 the annual SSSI meeting will be held in Lancaster at the Lancaster University (UK). The meeting will be a combined effort of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI) and European SSSI. The title of the conference is ‘Whose side are we on?’ Power, Stigma, Transgression and Exclusion in Everyday Life. So far, we have three confirmed keynote speakers: Kathy Charmaz, Ken Plummer and Staci Newmahr,. Kathy Charmaz will also give a two-day workshop on Grounded Theory on the Monday and Tuesday before the conference.
