It has around fifty members: active research fellows, representatives of research centers, retired sociologists, MA students on the last year of their studies, as well as young graduates. In 2010 the community underwent renovation and revival, which was made possible by the wave of young sociologists coming to the Gda\u0144sk University\u2019s Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Journalism (IFSiD UG), some of them also from outside Pomerania (Warsaw, Toru\u0144). The Association aims to unite Pomeranian sociologists and promote co-operation in the common effort to improve the social environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">The Gda\u0144sk Department of the PSA is the co-organizer of many academic conferences. In 2011, together with the Gda\u0144sk University\u2019s Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Journalism and the PSA\u2019s Legal Sociology Section, it organized the international conference <i><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Workshop of Unintended Consequences<\/em><\/i>. The event was a success, as indicated by the widespread international interest: it was attended by speakers from Australia, South Africa, Canada and others. A post-conference book was released under the title <i><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Sociology as Unintended. Robert Merton Revised<\/em><\/i>, containing texts by authors such as Colin Campbell, Richard Vernon, Piotr Sztompka and Jacek Kurczewski. In 2012 the Gda\u0144sk Department of the PSA is the co-organizer of the conference <i><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Sociological peregrinations through the world of modern sports <\/em><\/i>organized in connection with Euro 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The Gda\u0144sk Department also organizes periodic academic meetings under the name <i><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Afternoon Academy of Sociology<\/em><\/i>, inviting sociologists from Gda\u0144sk and all over Poland. The meetings are informal and are held in the artistic <i><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Cafe Delfin<\/em><\/i>. They involve discussions about selected texts. The discussions touch on interesting issues and perspectives of modern sociology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Moreover, in an effort to popularize sociology, the Department has returned to the 90s\u2019 Summer Sociological School. There are plans to organize annual trips to locations around the Tricity. A research camp has two functions: research and teaching. The research project in 2011 concerned socio-cultural changes in Stegna resulting from the transformation of Poland\u2019s government, administration and economy, as well as the country\u2019s EU membership. Under the guidance of sociologists the students tried to find out if and why in the last years the Mierzeja has experienced a revival of local identity politics, both on the part of the local government as well as its inhabitants working in non-governmental organizations or engaged in more informal initiatives.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gda\u0144sk Department of the Polish Sociological Association brings together sociologists from the Tricity and S\u0142upsk.
